A surface burner heating element coil provides cooking heat. When this part fails or begins to fail, the heating element will not heat properly or will not heat at all. Prior to repair, you may wish to troubleshoot the problem by swapping the heating element coil with another of the same size. If the heating element coil works properly in a different receptacle, then the original receptacle block may be the source of the problem. Always take appropriate safety precautions when performing troubleshooting or repairs.
